Clash of Clans Dragon - an instructional guide

By Kevin

The Dragon is a brave flying unit and is able of attacking both ground and air troops. Unlike the Balloon, the Dragon has range and deals splash damage, like the mortar or Wizard tower.
A Dragon does short-range splash damage when he attacks. This will be only  used against Clan Castle Troops and Walls. The purple Dragon symbol shown in the Barracks is actually a level 2 Dragon. The Dragon changes from green to purple after upgrading from level 1 to level 2.
Dragons have no picked target when attacking they will attack the closest building to them. However, once they see enemy Clan Castle troops, Heroes or Skeleton Trap skeletons they will leave their previously targeted building and engage the enemy troops instead. Once all of the enemy troops are defeated, they will proceed to attack the nearest building from their location.

Offensive Strategy

Most Dragon strategies use Lightning Spells to take out as many Air Defenses as as it is a  high damage defence to Dragons.
A powerful, but expensive, strategy for Town Hall 7 and Town Hall 8 players is using a combination of Dragons and Balloons. Dragons can distract the Air defences  and Wizard Towers while Balloons target the Defensive Buildings. Bring spells to help the troops move to the center  Rage Spells are a good spell for a Dragon attack.
Dragons are mostly used to get Trophies. When using Dragon attacks everyone should be careful of Buildings in the corners because Dragons have slow movement speed does not make it great for moving around from corner to corner. To stop this, attackers should bring some Barbarians or Minions or save their Barbarian King to take out lone buildings in the corners it might mean the difference between a 99% 2-star and a 100% 3-star attack.

Defensive Strategy
Dragons are one of the most powerful Troops in the game, and it can be difficult to defend against them. High-level Air Defenses are needed for success against Dragons.
As a Town Hall 8 player, keeping your Air Defenses apart while protecting them with Storages and other high hitpoint buildings is the key to preventing most 3-star attacks using Dragons. If the Air Defenses are too close together, a single Rage Spell used in a group of Dragons can quickly take out all three.
Dragons are great Clan Castle Troops. As a flying unit, the Dragon is completely safe from attacks from most ground troops, and his splash damage makes it especially good for destroying groups of Barbarians and Goblins. His high health also helps him survive attacks from Archers or Wizards.

Upgrade Differences
The Dragon encounters major graphic changes at levels 2, 3, 4 and 5.
  • Level 1 Dragons have green-colored skin and black eyes.
  • At level 2, the Dragon's skin turns from green to purple, matching his image in the Barracks. His eyes also turn the color of elixir (purple).
  • At level 3, the Dragon's skin changes again to dark grayish-brown.
  • At level 4, the Dragon's skin turns a deep red. His eyes also start flaming.
  • At level 5, the Dragon's skin turns into a brownish-crimson color. It also has golden horns near the back of its head and spikes on its back. Its wings also gets larger.

  1. This was really useful to me. I play Clash of Clans often and these tips are going to be great for defeating players, now that I have a dragon. Thank you Kevin!
