Interesting Facts About the First Thanksgiving

by Xiyan

Have you ever wondered about what the Pilgrims ate at the first Thanksgiving? Have you ever wondered who they ate with? They all are very interesting questions, that’s why I decided to write about them.
The first Thanksgiving actually wasn’t to celebrate pilgrims reuniting with their family (Like we do), but actually to celebrate their harvest with the Wampanoag Indians to thank them for helping them survive the Winter.

Turkey

Actually, at the first Thanksgiving people didn’t eat Turkey. Though, a Pilgrim named Edward Winslow did say in his journal that their colony’s governor (William Bradford) did send four men on a “fouling” mission. There was plenty of wild turkey around but there weren’t domestic Turkey (Which is the kind we ate). But they did come back with plenty of ducks, swans, and geese. But instead of stuffing to put in the birds, they put in herbs, onions, or nuts to add some extra flavor. Did you know? That after Thanksgiving feasts, some people actually feel drowsy? People often blame turkey because turkey contains Tryptophan, an acid that causes somnolent effect. But after studies, people think it’s the dessert that allows Tryptophan in to your brain. Did you know? That on the first Thanksgiving, they even ate seafood like eel and crabs, mussels too.

Fruits and Vegetables
List of culinary fruits

Since the first Thanksgiving was right after a harvest, they probably had a lot of fruits and vegetables there. The vegetables all on the first Thanksgiving table included onions, beans, lettuce, spinach, and carrots, possibly peas (That’s a lot!). But that didn’t mean that there wasn’t any fruits! Some were blueberries, plums, grapes, gooseberries (I don’t even know what that is!), raspberries, and of course cranberries! But they didn’t make cranberry sauce until about fifty years later! Because all the sugar the pilgrims brought from Europe were almost all gone.

See? The first Thanksgiving was very interesting. I bet you learned a lot! Right?! Well, after this research, I have to say… I sure did!
